YouTube also has features films both box-office block busters and sleepy little independent films. Blockbusters usually cost $3.99. You pay through Google Wallet (Google’s online payment service). Many sleeper films are 99 cents. YouTube even has original films of its own. There are many independent, old or poor films for free but since they’re free films. It does not cost anything to check them out. One great independent film is “Life In A Day” which is spectacular.

Add Videos To Your Site

A great thing that you can do with YouTube is add YouTube videos to your site using embedding. You can take those videos you uploaded to your channel and have those appear on your website. To do this go to the video you would like to use click “Share”, then click “Embed”. You will see some code starting with Go to your website’s HTML and paste the code in the page in the place you want the video to appear, then save the HTML page. The video will appear in the page inside the same player that you see on YouTube.

WordPress make the much easier. Just paste the URL of the page that the video is on into the visual editor, then save the page or post.

Most of the videos that you see on YouTube are free to share and embed as long as you don’t use it for a profit making venture.

Promote Yourself With YouTube

One of the best things you can do with YouTube is create a channel to promote yourself, your business or your cause. Post videos about your work or anything you think people might be interested in. Try to make all of your videos on one subject or related subjects. Upload your videos then change the background for your channel to make it look unique. Use Photoshop or some other illustration program to create some custom art work or just use a original picture with some writing on it. Try to get the name the website you are promoting in the custom background that you have created. The only place you can put a link to your site is in your YouTube profile. That is very small so definitely put it in your custom background.

One great example of someone who uses YouTube for promotion is Trey Ratcliff of Stuck In Customs. He has used free tools like Flickr, Google+ and YouTube to make a great living for himself. Check out his Stuck in Customs channel.

Someone else that is doing this quite effectively is Kina Grannis. This singer song-writers career has really taken off appearing on “The Degeneres Show” and the ‘Early Show”. She’s been tour on her own and backing up some major artist. What is so fantastic about this is she turned down a deal with a major record label so she could continue the Internet promotion thing.

Subscriptions

Once you have a YouTube account and you have signed in you can subscribe to you favorite channels. Let’s say you come across a great Photoshop tutorial by ajwood2001 and you wood like to see what other videos he has. Click on the user name ajwood2001 and it will take you to his channel. Let’s say you really like the tutorials on Mr. Wood channel and you would like to keep up up with his new videos. Just click the “Subscribe” button at the top of his channel page.

Manage And Edit

You can manage your videos visibility, stats and comments right inside YouTube. You can see your video’s stats, thumbs up and thumbs down all from the Uploads page.

You can edit your videos right inside YouTube. You can cut, append, edit the sound track and more right inside of YouTube.

From the Analytics page you can see how many people are viewing your videos and where they are viewing them from.

Of course you can watch YouTube videos from the YouTube website but what if you have dialup or even worst no Internet at all. With the “Download YouTube Videos as MP4 and FLV” extension for Firefox you can download YouTube videos when your near a high-speed connection and them watch them later when you don’t.

YouTube For Education

I know you’ve seen the sleepy cat videos, the failed skateboard stunts and the Cosplayers on YouTube. What you may not have seen is all the great educational videos. You can learn almost anything on YouTube. Anything from math to cooking. As a matter of fact, education videos are the largest growing area of YouTube.

Khan Academy

When you talk about education on YouTube you must first recognize the fine work being done at Khan Academy. Khan Academy Is a collection of YouTube videos and now a website created by Salmon Khan an MIT grad who started recording the videos for his nieces and it soon grew out of control with hundreds of videos and millions of views. The New Boston

The New Boston is a channel that can teach you a lot of technology from fro PHP to Javascript, form HTML5 to C++. There are even physics and math lessons. Buck Roberts the creator is really a great teacher and you can really learn a lot.

University YouTube

University YouTube is one more portal for learning of all kinds on the Internet. There are classes and lectures on many topic. Many of these come from really influential schools like MIT, Harvard and University of California.

Search

You can find lessons on most any topic by using YouTube search. You could try a topic like “WordPress”. To get somewhat different results you could search for “WordPress tutorial (s)” or even “WordPress beginner tutorial”. Try it yourself with any subject.

Windows 8 On Slow Computers

Last week at the KIPCUG general meeting I said I had not installed Windows 8 on a slow computer and I did not know what would happen with that computer if I did. Today I installed Windows 8 on my old laptop that is literally coming off the hinges and this is what happened:

The install was quick and effortless.
After the install it seemed quick and snappy.
It did not find a few drivers yet most were found when I ran the update driver wizard. I could not update my graphics driver but the default Microsoft driver gave me 1024 x 768 which was good enough for me.

I really haven’t found any significant issues. I thought there might be an issue with the graphics. The spec for Windows 8 is, “DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver”. I don’t know if my graphic device meets that spec but it doesn’t matter because it works. With Windows 7 Aero effects do not work on this laptop with Windows 8 Aero works fine. There is very little drag or lag. I don’t see much difference between the slow and faster machines.

The specs on my old laptop are:

1.5 MHz processor
1250 MB RAM
Generic Intel graphics with 64 MB RAM
